Planting instructions for Ginkgo seeds

Spring / summer:
Fill a small container with warm water, put the Ginkgo nuts in it and soak them for approx. 24 hours. Fill a small pot with loose soil. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them thinly. Make sure that the soil is always damp - but not soaking wet (use lukewarm water). For best results, choose a warm and sunny place (e.g. in a window). The seeds will take about 2-3 weeks to germinate. In spring, as soon as the shoots are about 10-15 cm high, plant them in a bigger pot. Use soil mixed with some sand.
Even though the Ginkgo is neither a deciduous tree nor a conifer, its leaves change colour in autumn and fall off the tree, before they emerge again in spring.

Autumn / winter:
Generally, Ginkgo seeds can be grown indoors all year round if you keep them in a warm and bright spot and follow these instructions.Swipe each seed lightly with sandpaper or a file and soak them over night in lukewarm water.
Place the seeds in the soil and cover them thinly. At a room or greenhouse temperature of 20-25 °C, the seeds should germinate after 4-5 weeks. If it is colder, the germination takes longer accordingly.
In mid-March, the Ginkgo can either be planted in the garden or in a big bucket.

Location / Light / Care:
Any location is possible. Only seedlings and young plants should be kept away from direct sunlight. Generally, Ginkgos grow on all soil types. Porous soil is particularly suitable since the Ginkgo tree stores water in its roots which it can fall back on during dry periods. Always avoid wetness!
Autumn / winter: Already as a young tree, the Ginkgo is hardy. However, when the leaves change colour in autumn, you should cover the young tree around the stem to protect it against frost.
Enjoy your Ginkgo tree – a survivor from primeval times!
